Mt.Zion Church in Oxford, MS

I painted this lovely church for my lovely aunt and uncle, “Aunt Shag and Nana” (pronounced Nah-Nah).

The history behind this church is pretty awesome. It was the oldest church in Lafayette County (established 1858) when The United Methodist Church decided to consolidate the smaller churches in the area.  Mt.Zion resisted but eventually closed their doors.

My aunt and uncle had a wealth of love and great memories for this church.

In 2003 the United Methodist Church signed Mt.Zion back over, enabling them to hire their own ministers.  They returned as a nondenominational church and as a symbol of perseverance to the community.

Shelby and Hugh McLarty poured love, energy, prayer, and resources into reopening the doors at last.
